Bentota is a coastal town in Sri Lanka, about 65 kilometres south of Colombo. The town is steeped in southern folklore. In fact, its very name is derived after a mythical demon named 'Bem' believed to have once ruled the ‘tota’ or river bank. Folklore aside, Bentota is a historical area, and its famous Galapatha Viharaya is one of a cluster of five ancient temples in the region. In the 17th Century, Portuguese colonizers built a small fort at the mouth of the Bentota River which marked the southern border of Portuguese held territory in Sri Lanka. Once the British took over, they introduced railways in the early 19th century, mainly to transport the coconut produce from the deep south to the capital, which saw the construction of the permanent bridge (Bentota Palama) to cross the river, which still exists and is in use today. Bentota offers some of the best romantic backdrops in the south-west coast, where the river and the sea meet with several hotels and an open air theatre shows, folk and mask dancing rituals, and plenty of cafes and restaurants in the area to while away your days. Bentota is a paradise for water sports and many activities taking place on Bentota River.
