Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is among the most popular beaches on the southern coast for its spectacular surf and diving opportunities and is home to fabulous hotels, restaurants and cafes.

The name Hikkaduwa is believed to have originated from two words that translate to ‘sword of knowledge’; Sip Kaduwa, with Sip being the shorter version of Shilpaya, which refers to knowledge in Sinhalese and Kaduwa, which means sword. Alternatively, its name also translates ‘coral’ or ‘seashell jungle. This coastal town has been popular on the tourist map since the 60’s, long before commercial tourism exploded in Sri Lanka. The spot is highly recommended for both beginner and advanced surfers and divers for its varied breaks and beautiful coral reefs. Comparative to other locations along the south, Hikkaduwa has some of the biggest variety of hotels for all budgets, restaurants, bars, cafes and late night clubs, which makes it a place for everyone. Just a little over 2 hours drive from Colombo, this coastal town is famous for its underwater delights and coral gardens. Dive shops dot the coast and for a few dollars, you can rent out goggles and flippers and explore underwater marvels at the Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary, which is located a few hundred metres offshore and estimated to have about seventy varieties of multi-coloured corals.
